Picking the right colors for your website can be a tough decision. You want to choose colors that are cohesive with your brand, but you must also think about how people will react when they see the colors on their screen. This can make selecting your website’s colors seem like a complicated balancing act.

When designing a color palette, use your brand’s colors as the dominant colors for your website. If your brand does not have any identifying colors, select one to two colors that represent your business and the luxury image you want to convey to your customers. Once your dominant colors are selected, choose a neutral color to balance it out and a contrasting color designed to stand out.

Below, I will go into further detail about the importance of each color. Whether you already have brand colors or you’re starting from scratch, the tips below will help you create a cohesive and professional-looking website.

Choose a Dominant Color

Choose one to two dominant colors for your website that will grab your visitor’s attention. Good color and website design portray an image of professionalism and esthetically appeal to your customer. The colors you select should not clash with each other or distract your customer from your product or service.

Having set colors associated with your business is great for branding and will help your customers easily identify your products and advertisements.

Choose a Neutral Color

Once you have determined which dominant color(s) to use, choose a neutral color to balance out your website. I suggest using whites, beiges, greys, or black as the harmonizing color for your website. Having a calm, neutral color will stop your site from looking cluttered or spammy.

It is essential to keep your customer’s attention on your brand and what you have to offer. Implementing a neutral color on your web pages will keep things simple and sophisticated.

Choose a Contrast Color

Now, it is time to choose a color that will draw in your visitor’s attention. Your contrast color is important because it distinguishes any call to action that you may have on your website. Contrast color will work well on your buttons and the various forms on your website. You can choose one or two contrast colors but be careful and make sure they do not clash with any other colors that you have selected.

When in Doubt, Use a Color Palette Generator

Thankfully, there are a few amazing websites that will help you find different colors and color combinations. I suggest visiting coolors.co if you are having trouble selecting your website’s color palette. If you have a logo, Coolors will identify your logo’s hex codes and show you which colors to use. It also offers a library of palettes that you can browse for inspiration.

Picking a color palette for your website can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be! I suggest picking 3-5 colors and keeping it simple. You want the contrast between hues to create visual interest without being too jarring. Selecting the right colors will help draw attention to different areas of your site so that people know exactly where to look.
